Discover more about Carducci Gardens

The Carducci Gardens, or Giardini Carducci, are a serene and picturesque retreat located in the heart of Perugia. Situated at the southern end of Corso Vannucci, adjacent to the Palazzo della Provincia, these gardens offer visitors a chance to relax and enjoy breathtaking views. Named in honor of the Nobel Prize-winning poet Giosuè Carducci, who was inspired by the scenery to write his ode "Canto all'amore" during his stay in Perugia in 1877, the gardens provide a tranquil setting for both tourists and locals. The gardens are enriched with a monument to Pietro Vannucci, also known as Perugino, and busts of other illustrious figures such as Pinturicchio, Alessi, Calderini and Antinori. The bronze statue of Perugino was created by Enrico Quattrini and inaugurated in 1923, commemorating the four-hundredth anniversary of the painter's death. From the gardens' elevated position, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Perugia's rooftops, the rolling cypress-covered hills, and the Umbrian countryside. The balustrade offers a particularly stunning vantage point, especially at sunset when the setting sun casts a golden glow over the city's travertine limestone buildings. The gardens themselves are beautifully maintained, providing a refreshing and peaceful atmosphere. Historically, the Carducci Gardens occupy a site that was once part of the Rocca Paolina, a fortress built by Pope Paul III in the 16th century. Today, the gardens symbolize the city's reclamation of its spaces, replacing symbols of power with greenery and public enjoyment. Each last Sunday of the month, the trade fair of Antique and collectors of Perugia takes place here and in July it hosts a session of Umbria Jazz.
