Discover more about Fosso bianco

Fosso Bianco, also known as Bagni San Filippo, is a captivating natural thermal area in the heart of Tuscany. Located in the Val d'Orcia region, near the village of Bagni San Filippo, these hot springs have been attracting visitors since Roman times. The area is characterized by its unique calcium carbonate formations, created over centuries by the mineral-rich waters. The most iconic formation is the 'Balena Bianca' (White Whale), a massive white cascade resembling a whale's back. The thermal waters, which emerge from the ground at approximately 48°C (118°F), flow over this formation, creating a visually stunning and soothing experience. The contrast between the white mineral deposits and the surrounding green forest is particularly striking. Visitors can soak in the various pools and streams, enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the mineral-rich waters. The water is said to help relax muscles, improve circulation, and soothe joint pain. The pools vary in temperature, with the hottest waters near the source and cooler options further downstream. Many also enjoy applying the mineral-rich mud to their skin for its softening effects. While the site is natural and undeveloped, a trail runs alongside the Fosso Bianco, providing easy access to the various pools and formations. It's recommended to wear appropriate footwear as the path can be steep, uneven and muddy.
