Discover more about Terme San Filippo

Nestled in the forests of Monte Amiata, in southern Tuscany, the Terme San Filippo offers a unique and enchanting thermal bathing experience. For centuries, the springs have attracted visitors seeking relaxation and healing in their mineral-rich waters. The area's most striking feature is the Fosso Bianco, a towering white cascade of calcium deposits formed over thousands of years. This natural monument includes the 'Balena Bianca' (White Whale), a massive limestone formation that resembles a whale's mouth. The thermal waters, rich in calcium, magnesium, and sulfates, emerge from the ground at a temperature of around 48°C (118°F). As the hot spring water flows, it creates a series of natural pools with varying temperatures, allowing visitors to find their perfect spot. The contrast between the white mineral deposits and the surrounding green forest creates a visually stunning landscape. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Etruscans and Romans were the first to use these springs for their perceived healing properties. The thermal baths were restored in 1566 by Cosimo I de Medici, and they became a favorite destination for the Medici family and other prominent figures. Today, Terme San Filippo remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking a natural spa experience. Visitors can explore the area by following the Sentiero Fosso Bianco, a trail that leads through the forest to the hot springs. The path can be steep and muddy in places, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Along the way, you'll encounter various waterfalls and pools, each with its unique character. Bathing in the thermal waters is free, but there is a small fee to access the area closest to the White Whale. While the natural hot springs are the main attraction, the village of Bagni San Filippo itself has a charming, tranquil atmosphere. The village takes its name from San Filippo Benizi, who retreated to this area in the 13th century.
