Saint Agostino: A Gothic Jewel in Montefalco

Located on Corso Goffredo Mameli in the historic center of Montefalco, the Church of Saint Agostino is a captivating example of Gothic architecture and a repository of Umbrian art. The Augustinians first established a presence here in 1275, building a small church before commissioning the larger structure that stands today. Completed in 1285, the church's facade is constructed of white and pink stone from the Subasio quarries, featuring an ogival portal with Corinthian-style pilasters and a rebuilt rose window. The interior of Saint Agostino is just as compelling, with a central nave flanked by rounded arches and a secondary nave added in 1327. Light filters through stained glass windows, illuminating the frescoes that adorn the walls. These frescoes, dating from the 14th to 16th centuries, showcase the work of various Umbrian and Tuscan artists. Noteworthy works include a Madonna della Misericordia attributed to Giovanni di Corraduccio, frescoes by Bernardino Mezzastris, and a Coronation of the Virgin attributed to Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The church also houses the relics of Blessed Illuminata and Chiarella, disciples of Santa Chiara della Croce da Montefalco, adding to its spiritual significance. Over the centuries, Saint Agostino has undergone several renovations and expansions. In 1327, an additional nave was added, and in 1466, the cloister to the left of the church was rebuilt. Following the collapse of the bell tower in 1489, the roof was lowered and buttressing was added. Today, the Church of Saint Agostino serves as a parish church and a reminder of Montefalco's rich artistic and religious heritage.
