Discover more about Caccamo's Castle

Caccamo Castle, perched atop a steep cliff 521 meters above sea level, is one of Sicily's largest and best-preserved Norman castles. Originally built in the 12th century by Matthew Bonnellus, the castle has been expanded and modified by various noble families, including the Chiaramonte and Amato families, leaving their mark on its architecture and history. The castle's strategic location offered control over the surrounding countryside, including the San Leonardo River Valley and the artificial lake Rosmarina. Its walls, towers, and battlements have witnessed centuries of Sicilian history, including the Barons' Revolt of 1160, when conspirators met in the Sala della Congiura (Conspiracy Hall) to plot against King William I. Inside the castle, visitors can explore a maze of rooms and stairways, including the armory, chapel, and prisons with graffiti-covered walls. The castle also houses a museum displaying medieval weapons, furniture and clothing. From the terraces, breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape can be enjoyed. According to local legend, the ghost of Matteo Bonello roams the castle in search of peace.
