Discover more about Castello di Inici

Castello di Inici, perched on the southern slope of Monte Inici, is a testament to Sicily's long and varied history. The castle's origins are shrouded in some mystery, with theories suggesting it was either the heart of the mythological city of Inico or the ancient city of Atala, founded by the Trojan Aceste. First documented in the 11th century, the castle has seen many changes over the centuries. In the 16th century, it was owned by the Sanclemente family, and in 1535, Charles V of Habsburg stayed there. The Jesuits took control in the 17th century, expanding the castle with a second courtyard, stables, and warehouses, leading to a period of prosperity. After the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, the castle passed to other noble families, including the Alliata family. Until the early years of Italian unification, Inici Castle was the center of a small hamlet, housing a barracks, school, and post office. Unfortunately, the earthquake of 1968 caused significant damage, and in 1998, one of the towers collapsed. Today, the ruins remain, surrounded by vineyards, offering a tangible link to Sicily's past. Frescoes from the castle's chapel, created in 1738 by Domenico La Bruna, are now preserved at the Matrice di Castellammare.
