Discover more about Tonnara di Scopello

Tonnara di Scopello, nestled in the picturesque village of Scopello in northwest Sicily, is more than just an Instagrammable spot; it's a journey through time. This ancient tuna fishery, dating back to the 13th century, stands as one of Sicily's most important and historic sites. Originally built no later than the 13th century, it was significantly expanded by the Sanclemente family between the 15th and 16th centuries. Later, it passed to the Company of Jesus and eventually the Florio family, who further improved the complex in 1874. For centuries, the tonnara served as a hub for tuna fishing, a practice deeply rooted in Sicilian tradition. The complex itself is a testament to this history, with its ancient buildings, boats, and tools offering a glimpse into the lives of the fishermen who worked here. Today, the Tonnara di Scopello has been transformed into a unique destination that blends history, hospitality, and natural beauty. Visitors can explore the grounds, visit the small museum to learn about the tonnara's past, or simply relax on the beaches and soak up the Mediterranean sun. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the tonnara are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and the dramatic cliffs and Faraglioni rock formations provide a stunning backdrop. For those seeking a more immersive experience, apartments are available for rent, offering guests access to a private beach and a chance to experience the tonnara after the day-trippers have departed.
