Discover more about Fontana del Cavallo Marino

The Fontana del Cavallo Marino, a captivating marble fountain, graces Piazza Santo Spirito in Palermo. Created by sculptor Ignazio Marabitti in the 18th century, the fountain depicts a sea creature that is half-horse and half-fish, accompanied by a triton and two putti. Originally, the fountain was commissioned by the Prince of Paternò for his Palazzo Ajutamicristo's garden. In 1864, it was moved to its current location in Piazza Santo Spirito, where the church of San Nicolò alla Kalsa once stood until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1823. During World War II, bombings in 1943 damaged the fountain. Fortunately, its components were salvaged and stored until the 1970s, when a restoration project brought it back to its original splendor. Today, the Fontana del Cavallo Marino stands as a symbol of Palermo's resilience and artistic heritage, with its beautiful water features and surrounding floral arrangements. Piazza Santo Spirito, near Porta Felice, also offers access to the Archivio di Stato and the International Puppet Museum.
