4.4

The Ducal Palace of Colorno, or Reggia di Colorno, is a stunning architectural complex with a rich and varied history. Originally built as a defensive fortress in the 14th century, it evolved into a noble residence, reaching its peak in the 18th century under the Farnese family. Duke Francesco Farnese commissioned a refurbishment that would transform the structure into the opulent palace visitors see today. Throughout its history, the palace has been influenced by several prominent families. Barbara Sanseverino converted it into an aristocratic villa in the 16th century. Later, the Farnese family, particularly Ranuccio II and his son Francesco, undertook significant renovations. In the 18th century, the Bourbons sought to emulate the Palace of Versailles, adding French influences to the palace's design. Maria Luigia of Habsburg, Napoleon's wife, favored the palace as a residence in the early 19th century and transformed the gardens into the English style. Inside the palace, visitors can explore lavishly adorned rooms with intricate frescoes, opulent furnishings, and historical artifacts. Highlights include the Appartamento Napoleonico, once home to Napoleon Bonaparte and Maria Luigia, the Court Theatre, and the Throne Room. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. The historical garden is open to visitors and showcases a mix of French and Italian landscaping styles.
