The Grotte dell'Abbadessa, or Caves of Pale, are located near the small village of Pale, in the municipality of Foligno. This natural wonder is the result of the Menotre river's water seeping into the earth, creating a remarkable hypogean karst system. Known since the 12th century, the caves have attracted illustrious visitors over the centuries, including Queen Christina of Sweden and Cosimo III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.The cave system extends for approximately 58 meters and is divided into several chambers. The 'Camera del laghetto' (Lake Chamber) is the first and most impressive, featuring a circular shape and a height of 8-9 meters. This chamber is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, some of which have merged to form perfect columns. A tunnel leads to the 'Camera delle Colonne a Terra' (Chamber of Ground Columns), where you can see a stalagmite in the shape of a lion, numerous stalactites resembling draperies, and imposing central columns.The caves are open to the public from May 1st to September 30th, on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Guided tours are available, lasting approximately 25 minutes. Visitors are advised to wear hiking shoes or sneakers with non-slip soles.
