Discover more about Fort Montego

Fort Montego, located in Montego Bay, stands as a reminder of Jamaica's colonial past. Originally constructed in 1750 and known as Fort Frederick, it was later renamed Fort George. The fort was designed by European engineers and built by enslaved Jamaicans to protect Montego Bay from potential invasions by pirates, as well as Spanish and French naval forces. Fort Montego was built in a polygon shape, a traditional design for forts, and was armed with cannons. It housed four 12-pounder guns and five smaller guns, along with barracks to accommodate 100 men, an armory for weapons and ammunition, and a small hospital with 40 beds. Despite its construction, the fort was deemed inefficient. In 1760, one of the fort's rusty guns exploded during a salute, killing a gunner. A few years later, Jamaican historian Edward Long noted the fort's decay and questioned whether it was worth repairing, as he felt its location was not strategically advantageous. The fort only fired at a ship once, in 1795, when officers mistook an English ship for a French privateer. Luckily, there were no casualties. The fort was last manned in 1832. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the fort, including cannons and stone walls, and learn about its history through informative plaques. The site also offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, making it a popular spot for photography.
