Discover more about Fort Montego

Fort Montego, initially named Fort Frederick in 1750, later renamed Fort George, was strategically designed by European engineers and constructed by enslaved Jamaicans to safeguard the town of Montego Bay. The fort was armed with cannons and housed barracks for up to 100 men, along with an armory and a small hospital. Despite its purpose, Fort Montego saw limited military action. One unfortunate incident involved a rusty cannon exploding during a salute in 1760, and on another occasion, the fort mistakenly fired upon a British ship.Today, visitors can explore the remains of the fort, including several cannons, and enjoy panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. The site provides informative plaques detailing the fort's history and its role in Jamaica's defense. Fort Montego is conveniently located near the Hip Strip, making it easily accessible for tourists. Though it requires a bit of an uphill walk, the fort is within easy reach of various lunch spots and shops.
