    Discover more about Kiyomizu-dera

Kiyomizu-dera, officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera, is a captivating Buddhist temple nestled in the eastern hills of Kyoto. Founded in 778, its history stretches back over 1200 years, with the site taking its name from the Otowa Waterfall. The temple is associated with the Kita-Hosso sect of Buddhism since 1965.The temple's main hall, a National Treasure, is famed for its large wooden stage that stands 13 meters above the hillside, constructed without the use of nails. This stage provides breathtaking views of Kyoto, especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. The expression 'to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu' is a Japanese equivalent to 'take the plunge,' referencing an Edo-period tradition where surviving a jump from the stage was believed to grant one's wish.Other key attractions include the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking, where visitors can test their luck in finding love by navigating between two stones with their eyes closed. The Otowa Waterfall offers three separate streams, each believed to bestow different benefits: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life, though drinking from all three is considered greedy. The Koyasu Pagoda, a three-storied structure, is said to bring about easy and safe childbirth.Kiyomizu-dera is open from 6:00 to 18:00, with extended hours during the summer and special evening illuminations. The temple was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1994 as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.
