Discover more about Takayama Jinya

Takayama Jinya, nestled in Hida Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, stands as a unique testament to Japan's feudal past. It is the only surviving provincial government office (Jinya) from the Edo period, offering an immersive journey into the administrative heart of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Originally the residence of the Kanamori clan, the building transitioned to government use in 1692 when the shogunate took direct control of the Hida region, prized for its timber resources. For 176 years, 25 generations of governors and magistrates dispatched from Edo (present-day Tokyo) oversaw the region's governance from this location. The complex was in official use until 1969 and opened as a museum. Visitors can explore the meticulously maintained tatami-mat rooms that once served as offices, conference areas, guest quarters, and residential spaces. The interrogation room offers a chilling insight into the judicial practices of the time. The complex includes a large rice storehouse built in the 1600s, one of Japan's largest traditional rice granaries, now a museum showcasing artifacts and documents. Architectural highlights include the Kure Roof, bearing marks from the Umemura Uprising, and the Seigaiha Wave Pattern, symbolizing authority. The Jinya-mae Morning Market, located right outside the entrance, provides a taste of local culture with fresh produce and crafts. Takayama Jinya offers a captivating experience for history enthusiasts and travelers seeking a tangible connection to Japan's Edo period.
