    Takayama Jinya is centrally located in Takayama's old town, a short walk from most major attractions. From Takayama Station, walk approximately 10 minutes east, crossing the Miyagawa River. The Jinya is located near the Nakabashi Bridge. Look for signs directing you to the historical site. No costs are involved if walking.

    Public Transport

    From Takayama Station, take the Machinami Bus. The fare is 100 yen per ride. The bus will drop you off near Takayama Jinya. Alternatively, a 1-day pass for 500 yen allows unlimited rides on the Machinami, Sarubobo, and Takumi bus lines.

It is the only surviving provincial government office (Jinya) from the Edo period, offering an immersive journey into the administrative heart of the Tokugawa Shogunate.Originally the residence of the Kanamori clan, the building transitioned to government use in 1692 when the shogunate took direct control of the Hida region, prized for its timber resources. For 176 years, 25 generations of governors and magistrates dispatched from Edo (present-day Tokyo) oversaw the region's governance from this location. The complex was in official use until 1969 and opened as a museum.Visitors can explore the meticulously maintained tatami-mat rooms that once served as offices, conference areas, guest quarters, and residential spaces. The interrogation room offers a chilling insight into the judicial practices of the time.
