Getting There

Public Transport

From Azabu-juban Station (Namboku Line or Oedo Line), it's approximately a 7-8 minute walk. Exit the station and follow the signs towards Azabu Hikawa Shrine. Alternatively, from Hiroo Station (Hibiya Line), it's about a 12-minute walk. Local trains and subways require a Suica or Pasmo card for convenient fare payment. A single subway fare from Roppongi to Azabu-juban is around ¥160-¥180. Minato City also operates the 'Chii-Bus' community bus with several routes in the area. The fare is a flat ¥100 per ride.
Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Tokyo. From Roppongi, a taxi to Azabu Hikawa Shrine takes only a few minutes. Taxi fares in Tokyo start at ¥730 for the first 2 km, with additional charges per kilometer. A short trip from Roppongi to the shrine would likely cost between ¥1,100 and ¥1,400. Be aware that fares increase during nighttime hours (10:00 PM to 5:00 AM).
Walking

From Azabu-juban Station, follow the main street and turn right onto a smaller street leading uphill. The shrine will be on your left after a short walk. From Roppongi, the walk is approximately 1.4km and takes about 17 minutes. Be prepared for a slight incline as the shrine is located on Sendai Hill.

Azabu Hikawa Shrine, located in the Motoazabu district of Minato City, Tokyo, is a Shinto shrine with a rich history and cultural significance. Founded possibly as early as 942 AD, the shrine has been a spiritual center for the Azabu area for centuries. It was moved to its current location in 1659. The shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a deity of courage, victory, and fortune.During the Edo period, the shrine was visited by prominent figures, including the Tokugawa shoguns, who sought blessings for safe childbirth and family prosperity. The fifth Shōgun, Iemitsu, and his mother, Keishōin, were frequent visitors. Although the main hall was destroyed in 1945 during the war, it was rebuilt in 1948 using reinforced concrete, blending traditional aesthetics with modern engineering.Today, Azabu Hikawa Shrine is also known as a pilgrimage spot for fans of the anime series "Sailor Moon," as it served as the model for the Hikawa Shrine in the series. The shrine attracts visitors from around the world who come to experience its spiritual ambiance and admire its beautiful design. The shrine offers omikuji (paper fortune slips) in both Japanese and English, catering to its international visitors. The Grand Azabu Hikawa Mikoshi, a large palanquin, was restored in 2021 through crowdfunding and is displayed during the annual Azabu Hikawa Festival in September.
