Discover more about CANAL CITY HAKATA

Canal City Hakata, a sprawling complex in the heart of Fukuoka, is more than just a shopping mall; it's an urban oasis blending retail, entertainment, and architectural marvels. Opened in 1996, the complex was designed by The Jerde Partnership with the concept of creating a 'city theater', where visitors are the main attraction. The complex features a 180-meter canal that winds through the center, surrounded by colorful, curved buildings. This design creates a unique atmosphere, setting it apart from typical shopping malls. The canal is the focal point for dynamic fountain shows that occur regularly, enhanced by 3D projection mapping on the adjacent Grand Hyatt Fukuoka hotel. These shows combine water, light, music, and visuals to create a captivating experience. Canal City boasts a wide variety of shops, from local Japanese brands to international retailers, offering fashion, accessories, electronics, and souvenirs. The complex also features a cinema, a game center, and the Canal City Theater, offering diverse entertainment options. Food lovers can explore a range of dining options, including the Ramen Stadium, which houses several ramen restaurants from across Japan. In July 2025, Canal City will open a new gourmet street called 'KUOHKA' with 21 restaurants. Beyond shopping and dining, Canal City hosts various events and live performances, adding to its appeal as a cultural hub. Its central location and accessibility make it a must-visit destination for tourists in Fukuoka.
