Getting There

  • Walking

    From Himeji Station's north exit, Himeji Castle is approximately a 15-20 minute walk. Head north on Otemae-dori Street, a broad, pedestrian-friendly avenue that leads directly to the castle. You'll pass shops and restaurants along the way. Upon reaching the castle grounds, enter through the Otemon Gate into the Sannomaru, the admission-free outer bailey. Follow the signs to the ticket booth at the Hishi Gate to enter the paid area.

  • Public Transport

    From Himeji Station's north exit, take a Shinki bus to the Himeji Castle Otemon-mae bus stop, a 5-minute ride. The fare is approximately 210 yen. From the bus stop, it's a short walk to the Otemon Gate, the main entrance to Himeji Castle. Enter through the gate and follow the signs to the ticket booth at the Hishi Gate to enter the paid area.

  • Taxi

    From Himeji Station, a taxi ride to Himeji Castle takes about 5 minutes and costs approximately 800 yen. The taxi will drop you off near the Otemon Gate. Enter through the gate and follow the signs to the ticket booth at the Hishi Gate to enter the paid area.

Himeji Castle, a hilltop Japanese castle complex in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, is considered the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture. Often called Hakuro-jō or Shirasagi-jō (White Egret Castle or White Heron Castle) for its brilliant white exterior resembling a bird taking flight, the castle comprises a network of 83 rooms with advanced defensive systems from the feudal period.The castle's history dates back to 1333 when Akamatsu Norimura built a fort on Himeyama hill. Expanded over the centuries, the castle complex, as it stands today, was completed in 1609. It consists of over 80 buildings spread across multiple baileys connected by a series of gates and winding paths. Visitors can explore the main keep, a six-story wooden structure, and the west bailey (Nishinomaru), which offers a different perspective of the main keep.Himeji Castle is not only a national treasure and a World Heritage Site but also a symbol of power and prestige. Its intricate layout, defensive mechanisms, and elegant white walls showcase the pinnacle of Japanese castle technology and innovation. The castle has undergone several restorations, most recently between 2009 and 2015, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
