Getting There

  • Walking

    From JR Matsumoto Station, exit via the main exit and follow the signs towards Matsumoto Castle. The walk is approximately 15 minutes, taking you past the Nakamachi and Nawate shopping streets. Enjoy the sights and local shops along the way. No cost involved.

  • Public Transport

    From JR Matsumoto Station, take the Town Sneaker bus (North Course) to the Matsumotojo-Shiyakushomae stop. The bus ride takes about 5 minutes. A single ride costs ¥200. Consider purchasing a Town Sneaker one-day ticket for ¥500 if you plan to visit multiple attractions via the bus.

    From the Nagano Expressway, take the Matsumoto Exit and drive approximately 3 km (15 minutes) towards Matsumoto City. Several parking areas are available near the castle. The closest options include the Matsumoto Castle Gate Parking Area (¥150/30 minutes) and the Kaichi Parking Area (¥200 for the first hour, then ¥100/30 minutes). Be aware that parking can be limited, especially during peak seasons.

Matsumoto Castle is a flatland castle (hirajiro) distinguished by its black wainscoting and formidable presence. Originally known as Fukashi Castle, its history dates back to the Sengoku period. The castle's origins began as a fortification constructed by the Ogasawara clan in the early 16th century. It later fell under the control of the Takeda clan before being renamed Matsumoto Castle.The main keep, constructed in the late 16th century, is the oldest surviving castle tower in Japan. The castle complex includes a secondary donjon and a turret adjoined to the main keep, a unique architectural feature. Inside, the wooden interior offers an authentic experience, showcasing steep stairs, stone-dropping apertures, and archer openings. The observation deck at the top of the main keep provides panoramic views of Matsumoto and the surrounding Japanese Alps.During the Edo period, Matsumoto Castle served as the administrative center of the Matsumoto Domain. Today, it stands as a National Treasure of Japan, drawing visitors with its historical significance and beauty. The castle grounds are a popular spot for cherry blossoms in spring, enhancing its picturesque setting. Costumed ninja and samurai often roam the grounds, entertaining visitors and posing for photos.
