Kiyomizu-dera, officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera, has a history stretching back over 1250 years. Founded in 778 by Enchin Shonin, the temple's origins are linked to the sacred Otowa Waterfall, from which it derives its name. According to legend, the monk Kenshin was told in a dream to journey north, where he discovered the waterfall and met a hermit who tasked him with carving a Kannon statue. In 780, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, a prominent military leader, constructed a hall at the site, influenced by Kannon worship, which laid the foundation for Kiyomizu-dera. The temple was later designated as an imperial temple in 805. The current buildings date back to 1633, rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu. The main hall is a National Treasure. Kiyomizu-dera was initially associated with the Hosso sect of Buddhism before establishing its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965.The temple's wooden stage, constructed without nails, offers panoramic views of Kyoto. Kiyomizu-dera is also home to the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to love and matchmaking, and the Otowa Waterfall, where visitors can drink from the streams for good luck. The practice of jumping from the veranda to have a wish granted was outlawed in 1872. Kiyomizu-dera was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.Visiting Kiyomizu-dera is more than just seeing a temple; it's experiencing a journey through history, spirituality, and natural beauty. The approach to the temple through the Higashiyama District, with its shops and restaurants, adds to the experience. Special evening illuminations during cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons enhance the temple's beauty.
