Discover more about Yuki no Ōtani

Yuki no Otani, translating to "Great Snow Valley," is a remarkable snow canyon located along the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route in Japan. This world-renowned attraction is characterized by its towering snow walls, sometimes reaching up to 20 meters (65 feet) in height, created by clearing heavy snowfall from the mountain road. The Yuki no Otani is accessible to tourists for a limited time each year, typically from mid-April to mid-June. During this period, visitors can walk along a designated 500-meter section between the towering snow walls, experiencing the awe-inspiring scale of the canyon. The sheer size of the snow walls offers a unique and unforgettable experience, often described as walking through a frosty tunnel. The walls gradually shrink as the weather warms. The snow walls are not a natural formation but are created annually by dedicated snowplow operators. Using GPS technology and satellite phones, these drivers carefully carve a path through the deep snow, a task that can take about a month to complete. The Tateyama mountain range experiences some of the world's heaviest snowfall, with an average of 7 meters of snow each year and up to 20 meters in years with particularly heavy snowfall. Located near Murodo Station, the highest point on the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, Yuki no Otani offers stunning views of the surrounding Tateyama Mountain Range. Murodo is situated at an altitude of over 2,450 meters (8,000 feet), so visitors should be prepared for thinner air and cold temperatures, ranging from -10 to -5 degrees Celsius (14–23 Fahrenheit). Dressing in layers and wearing waterproof shoes is highly recommended.
