Discover more about Chūgoku Mountains

The Chūgoku Mountains (中国山地, Chūgoku Sanchi) form the spine of western Japan, extending approximately 500 kilometers from Hyōgo Prefecture to the coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture. This extensive mountainous area, characterized by its east-west orientation, isn't a single, unified range but rather a collection of peaks, plateaus, and basins that define the Chūgoku region. Geologically diverse, the mountains feature granite formations shaped by erosion, creating a landscape of varied elevations. While not exceptionally high, with the tallest peak, Mt. Daisen, reaching 1,729 meters, the range presents numerous hiking opportunities for beginner and intermediate adventurers. The mountains have historically served as a natural barrier, separating the San'in region to the north from the San'yō region to the south, influencing climate and culture. Beyond their geological significance, the Chūgoku Mountains are steeped in history and folklore. The region was an early center for iron production, utilizing the mountains' iron sand resources. Today, the mountains support cattle ranches, contributing to the production of wagyu beef, and their rivers irrigate extensive rice fields. The area is also rich in biodiversity, home to diverse flora and fauna, including foxes, wild boars and the Japanese raccoon dog, inspiring local folklore. For tourists, the Chūgoku Mountains offer a range of experiences. Hiking trails abound, with popular destinations like Mt. Daisen, known for its spiritual significance and panoramic views. The Takashimizu Trail offers an easier trek through beautiful mountain scenery. The region's numerous national parks protect pristine landscapes, offering opportunities for camping, bird watching, and enjoying the natural beauty of western Japan.
