    Discover more about Dotonbori

Dotonbori, Osaka's entertainment heart, pulsates with energy along the Dotonbori Canal. This iconic district, stretching from Dotonboribashi Bridge to Nipponbashi Bridge in the Namba area, is a sensory explosion of neon lights, bustling restaurants, and lively bars. The area's history dates back to 1612 when merchant Yasui Doton invested his fortune to expand the Umezu River into a canal, linking it with the Kizugawa River. Though Doton died during the Siege of Osaka in 1615, his cousins completed the project, naming the canal in his honor. The canal fostered trade and entertainment, with theaters and teahouses flourishing along its banks.Today, Dotonbori is famous for its over-the-top signage, including the iconic Glico Running Man, a symbol of Osaka. Other eye-catching landmarks include the Kani Doraku crab and the Kuidaore Taro clown. While the area's theater culture has diminished, the Shochikuza theater still hosts kabuki plays and musicals, and smaller comedy clubs provide entertainment.Food is central to the Dotonbori experience, embodying Osaka's 'kuidaore' spirit – 'eat until you drop'. Street food stalls and restaurants offer local specialties like takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), kushikatsu (fried skewers), and ramen. Exploring Dotonbori at night, when the neon lights illuminate the canal, is a quintessential Osaka experience.
