Discover more about Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle (Ōsakajō) is more than just a beautiful structure; it's a symbol of Osaka's rich history and resilience. Construction of the original castle began in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a powerful warlord who aimed to unify Japan. He intended for it to be the center of a new, unified Japan under Toyotomi rule. It was the largest castle at the time. Over the centuries, the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times due to wars, lightning strikes, and natural disasters. After Hideyoshi's death, Tokugawa troops attacked and destroyed the castle and terminated the Toyotomi lineage in 1615. The castle was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665, burnt down, and was not rebuilt during the feudal ages. The current ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle tower was built in 1931. It miraculously survived the city-wide air raids during the war. Major repair works gave the castle new glamor in 1997. Today, the castle tower houses an informative museum about the castle's history and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Visitors can explore the museum's exhibits, which showcase historical artifacts and offer insights into the castle's past. The castle also offers a panoramic view of the Osaka skyline from its observation deck. The surrounding Osaka Castle Park provides a green oasis in the city, with walking paths, gardens, and recreational areas. The park is a popular spot for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in the spring.
