Discover more about Chisuji Falls

Chisuji Falls, translating to 'Thousand Water Strands,' is a unique and serene waterfall located in the Kowakudani area of Hakone, Japan. Unlike towering waterfalls, Chisuji Falls is distinguished by its impressive width of 20 meters and a modest height of only 3 meters. The water gently flows down a broad, moss-covered volcanic rock surface, creating the illusion of countless individual streams. This natural wonder was relatively unknown until the early 19th century when the founder of Mikawaya Ryokan, one of Hakone's oldest hot spring inns, recognized its potential. The innkeeper developed a hiking path and a teahouse nearby to attract visitors, making Chisuji Falls a popular destination by the Taisho era (1912-1926). While earthquakes have altered the landscape, the falls remain a worthwhile sight, especially during autumn when the surrounding maple trees display vivid colors. In July, fireflies add a magical ambiance to the area. The falls are easily accessible via a short, signposted hiking trail from Kowakudani Station, making it a refreshing 20-minute walk. The gentle sound of flowing water and the surrounding greenery offer a peaceful retreat for both body and soul.
