Hakone Gōra Park, a serene and picturesque garden, is located on the hillside near Gōra. Opened in 1914, it stands as Japan's first French formal garden, a sophisticated design choice for the time. The park was initially conceived as a symbol for Gōra, marking the terminus of the Hakone Tozan Railway. Designed by Shichigoro Isshiki, a leading landscape designer, the park features a symmetrical layout with a central pond and fountain. The park offers diverse attractions, including vibrant flower beds, a rose garden with over 1,000 roses of approximately 140 varieties, and greenhouses. One greenhouse houses tropical herbs, while the other features a bougainvillea collection, including one of the oldest in Japan. Visitors can also experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in a tea room built in 1922 or participate in craft activities like glass blowing and pottery painting. Gōra Park adapts to changing times by hosting art exhibits and seasonal events, blending traditional charm with contemporary attractions. Registered as a tangible cultural property of Japan in 2014, the park provides a tranquil setting that complements the wellness offerings of the Hakone region.
