Discover more about Mount Kurama

Mount Kurama, located north of Kyoto, is a sanctuary where nature, history, and spirituality converge. For centuries, this 584-meter mountain has drawn pilgrims and seekers to its verdant slopes, offering respite from the city below. The journey begins in Kurama village, a charming enclave that sets the stage for the ascent. A short walk from the station leads to the entrance of Kurama-dera Temple, a sprawling complex founded in 770. Visitors can choose to hike the winding mountain path, a journey of 30-45 minutes passing smaller shrines and towering cedar trees, or opt for a brief cable car ride to reach the main temple. Kurama-dera itself is a treasure trove of history and legend. Founded by a disciple of Jianzhen, the temple has evolved through various Buddhist sects, ultimately embracing its unique identity. It's dedicated to Sonten, a trinity of deities representing love, light, and power. The mountain is also intrinsically linked to the mystical Tengu, long-nosed creatures believed to be guardians of the mountains. Legend says that Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a renowned warrior, trained in swordsmanship with the Tengu on Mount Kurama. Beyond the temple, Mount Kurama is known as the birthplace of Reiki, a healing art founded by Mikao Usui in 1922. Visitors can explore the mountain's network of trails, discover serene groves, and even continue their journey to the neighboring village of Kibune, known for its Kifune Shrine and riverside dining. For those seeking relaxation, Kurama Onsen offers therapeutic hot springs with stunning natural views. Whether seeking spiritual enlightenment, natural beauty, or historical immersion, Mount Kurama offers an unforgettable escape.
