Discover more about Sokoyama

Sokoyama, also known as Mt. Soko, is a prominent peak located in Hiroshima, offering a blend of natural beauty and cultural history. Rising to a height of 356 meters, the mountain provides accessible hiking trails for various skill levels, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The mountain's history is intertwined with Soko Ueda, a tea master and senior retainer of the Asano Clan, who planted a red pine tree on the summit in 1621 to enhance the view from his teahouse and the Shukkei-en garden. The pine tree was named Sokomatsu, and the mountain became known as Sokoyama. While the original tree is gone, a fourth-generation pine was planted in 1998. The trails to the summit wind through dense forests and rocky terrains, offering glimpses of the surrounding landscapes. The well-marked paths make it easy to navigate, and the scent of pine trees and sounds of nature create a peaceful atmosphere. Upon reaching the peak, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of Hiroshima, the Seto Inland Sea, and the surrounding mountains and valleys. Many find it a perfect spot for photography and relaxation. Mitaki Temple, located at the foot of Sokoyama, adds another layer of interest to the area. This historic temple features a two-story pagoda, waterfalls, and various Buddhist statues. Starting a hike from Mitaki Temple allows visitors to experience both cultural and natural attractions in one visit.
