Discover more about Tottori Sand Dunes

The Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘, Tottori Sakyū) are a remarkable natural formation stretching 16 kilometers along the coast of the Sea of Japan in Tottori Prefecture. These dunes, reaching up to 50 meters in height, are the largest in Japan and a part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park. The dunes were created over thousands of years by sediment deposits carried from the Chūgoku Mountains by the Sendai River into the Sea of Japan. Strong sea currents and winds then pushed these sediments back onto the shore, shaping the dunes into an ever-changing landscape. Visitors can explore the vast expanse of sand, take in panoramic views of the coastline, and enjoy activities like camel rides, paragliding, and sandboarding. The Sakyu Center provides an observation deck accessible by chairlift, offering stunning views. The Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center offers insights into the dune's geology and ecology. Nearby, The Sand Museum displays impressive sand sculptures by international artists, with exhibitions changing annually. Efforts to preserve the dunes began after World War II, when reforestation programs inadvertently led to grassland overgrowth. Today, conservation efforts continue to maintain the unique sandy landscape and protect it from erosion and unauthorized markings.
