Gakuenji Temple: A Mountain Retreat of History and Beauty

Gakuenji Temple, or Wanibuchi Temple, is a captivating Buddhist temple located in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 594, it is one of the oldest temples in the country, steeped in legend and history. The temple's name, translating to "crocodile pool temple," originates from a tale of a monk who dropped a religious instrument into a waterfall basin, only for a crocodile to return it.The temple's origins are linked to Empress Suiko, who ordered its construction after a monk named Chishun Shonin prayed at Furo Waterfall and cured her eye disease. By the Middle Ages, Gakuenji had grown into a vast complex, becoming a significant center for mountain asceticism. The legendary warrior monk Benkei is said to have trained here. The bonshō bell at Gakuen-ji has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and was said to have been brought there by Benkei himself.Today, Gakuenji offers visitors a tranquil escape surrounded by natural beauty. The temple is particularly famous for its vibrant autumn foliage, drawing crowds in late November. Visitors can explore the main hall, Matara Shrine, and hike to Furo Waterfall, where the Zaodo Hall is built into the cliff face behind the cascading water. The temple is also a stop on several pilgrimage routes, including the Izumo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and the Chugoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.The approach to the temple is a scenic experience, with a gentle walk along a mountain stream leading to the Niomon Gate. The temple grounds, designated as a National Historic Site in 2016, retain the atmosphere of a spiritual mountain temple.
