    Public Transport

    From JR Izumoshi Station, take the Ichibata Bus Susa Line towards Izumo-susa. The bus ride takes approximately 40 minutes. Get off at the Susa-jinja Mae bus stop. From there, it's a short 2-minute (230m) walk to the shrine entrance. Bus fare is around ¥800.

    From JR Izumoshi Station, a taxi ride to Susa Shrine takes approximately 30-40 minutes. The estimated cost is ¥5,000-¥7,000. Taxis are readily available at the station.

    Susa Shrine, located in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, is a site steeped in history and mythology. It is considered the original shrine dedicated to Susano-o-no-Mikoto, a prominent figure in Japanese legends and the Shinto god of storms and seas. According to legend, Susano-o chose this location as his final resting place, giving the area his name.Founded in 776, Susa Shrine is mentioned in ancient texts such as the Izumo Fudoki. The shrine complex includes several notable features. The main hall (honden) was built in 1861 and is considered an important cultural property. Behind the shrine stands a giant cedar tree, estimated to be over 1,300 years old and revered as a power spot. Visitors often touch its roots and make offerings.The shrine is also known for the "Seven Wonders of Susa," a collection of local legends and unusual phenomena. These include a well that produces salt water, a cherry tree that casts no shadow, and rocks that develop white spots to foretell the quality of the harvest. Across from the main shrine building is a smaller shrine dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, Susano-o's older sister. Note that the main building is undergoing renovations until November 2025, with other buildings to follow through 2027.
