Discover more about Yunohira Observation Deck

Yunohira Observation Deck, situated at the 4th station of Sakurajima's North Peak (Kitadake), stands 373 meters above sea level, offering the highest panoramic views accessible to the public. From this vantage point, visitors can witness the raw beauty of Sakurajima's volcanic landscape, including rough lava fields and plumes of volcanic smoke rising from the active crater. The deck provides unobstructed views of Kagoshima City and the tranquil waters of Kinko Bay. On clear days, the Kirishima mountain range to the north and Mount Kaimon to the south can also be seen. The observation deck's design incorporates elements inspired by Sakurajima's name, which translates to 'cherry blossom island,' with a roof shaped like cherry blossom petals. The site features informative displays detailing the geology and history of the area, enhancing the visitor experience. Evenings are particularly recommended, as the mountainside is bathed in red hues, creating a breathtaking sunset view. While it is prohibited to approach within two kilometers of the volcano's craters, Yunohira Observation Deck provides a safe and accessible location to observe Sakurajima's volcanic activity. The occasional shower of small stones and ash serves as a reminder of the volcano's power. Despite the volcanic activity, the area is known for its rich soil, which supports the growth of white radishes and fruits.
