Dotonbori, Osaka's entertainment heart, is a sensory explosion of neon lights, street food, and lively nightlife. Situated in the Minami district, it runs along the Dotonbori canal, historically a theater district that has evolved into a modern playground of food, entertainment, and eccentric charm. The area's origins trace back to 1612 when merchant Yasui Doton invested his fortune to expand the Umezu River, creating a canal to boost commerce. Though Doton died during the Siege of Osaka, his cousins completed the project, naming the canal Dotonbori in his honor. By 1621, the Tokugawa Shogunate designated Dotonbori as Osaka's entertainment district, attracting theaters and restaurants. While Dotonbori's theater scene diminished after World War II, its reputation as a gastronomic paradise flourished. Today, it's synonymous with Osaka's 'kuidaore' culture, inviting visitors to indulge in local delicacies like takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu. Iconic landmarks include the Glico Running Man sign, a symbol of Osaka since 1935, and the Kani Doraku crab, a giant moving crustacean advertising a famous crab restaurant.Visitors can explore the Tombori River Walk, a promenade along the canal, or take a river cruise for a unique perspective.
