Discover more about Kuragarizaka

Kuragarizaka, nestled in the heart of Kanazawa's Kazuemachi Chaya District, offers a captivating journey into the city's past. This narrow, stone-paved slope, whose name translates to 'Dark Slope,' was once a clandestine route for wealthy merchants seeking discreet passage to the district's teahouses. Today, it stands as a picturesque reminder of Kanazawa's Edo-era charm and cultural heritage. Located in Kazuemachi, one of Kanazawa's three preserved chaya districts, Kuragarizaka exudes a tranquil atmosphere with its traditional wooden buildings and the gentle sounds of the nearby Asano River. The district itself dates back to the early Meiji period (1868-1912), when it flourished as an entertainment area where geiko (Kanazawa geisha) entertained guests with music, dance, and conversation. As you ascend or descend Kuragarizaka, you'll notice the interplay of light and shadow, a characteristic that gives the slope its name. The dim lighting and narrow passage create an intimate setting, inviting visitors to imagine the secrets and stories that once unfolded here. The slope connects the back of the Kuboichi Ototsurugi-gu Shrine to the Kazuemachi Chaya District. Another nearby alley, running parallel to Kuragarizaka, is called Akari-zaka, or “slope of lights”. Kuragarizaka is particularly enchanting during the cherry blossom season, when the surrounding trees burst into bloom, creating a stunning visual spectacle. The combination of natural beauty and historical ambiance makes it a popular spot for photographers and those seeking a peaceful escape.
