Nestled in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto, Giō-ji is a tranquil temple steeped in history and natural beauty. The temple's origins are linked to the poignant story of Giō, a dancer who, according to "The Tale of the Heike," was once favored by the powerful military leader Taira no Kiyomori. When Kiyomori's affections shifted to another, Giō, along with her mother and sister, retreated to this temple to become nuns, dedicating their lives to Buddhism.Giō-ji's main attraction is its stunning moss garden, home to over 120 species of moss.
