Overview

Kamishichiken Kabukai, nestled in the northwest of Kyoto, stands as the city's oldest geisha district, with a history stretching back to the Muromachi period. Its name, meaning "Seven Upper Houses," originates from seven teahouses constructed near the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in 1589. These teahouses were built using leftover materials from the shrine's reconstruction and were later recognized by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who granted them exclusive rights to operate as geisha residences.Kamishichiken offers visitors a unique window into the world of geisha culture. Unlike the more bustling Gion district, Kamishichiken exudes a quieter, more traditional atmosphere. Here, you can witness the artistry of geiko and maiko through captivating performances that blend traditional music, dance, and storytelling. The performances are held in intimate settings, allowing for a closer connection between the performers and the audience.Beyond the performances, Kamishichiken itself is a delight to explore. Stroll through the narrow streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, and you might catch a glimpse of geiko or maiko gracefully making their way to appointments. The district is also located near Nishijin, known for its exquisite textile craftsmanship, offering opportunities to discover local crafts and souvenirs. Kamishichiken provides an immersive experience into Kyoto's rich cultural heritage.
