Overview

The Keage Incline, located near Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto, is a 582-meter-long historical site that was once the world's longest inclined railway. Constructed in the Meiji era as part of the Lake Biwa Canal project, it facilitated the transport of boats carrying goods and passengers over a 36-meter height difference. The canal itself was built to revitalize Kyoto after the capital moved to Tokyo, aiming to restore the city's economic and urban functions.Operating from 1891 to 1948, the incline used trolleys to carry boats between the Keage and Nanzenji boat piers. This system allowed for the continuous transportation of goods without the need to unload cargo. The Keage Incline played a crucial role in supporting Kyoto's economy by enabling efficient transportation along the canal.Today, the Keage Incline is a designated cultural property of Kyoto City and a popular tourist attraction. The original rails have been preserved, allowing visitors to walk along the former railway and experience a sense of stepping back in time. The site is particularly famous for its cherry blossoms, with approximately 90 cherry trees lining the tracks, creating a stunning pink tunnel in spring. In addition to the cherry blossoms, visitors can explore other nearby attractions, including the Nejiri Manpo tunnel, built with a unique spiral brick pattern to withstand the weight of the incline, and the historic Keage Power Station, Japan's first hydroelectric power plant for public use. The Keage Incline offers a unique blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination in Kyoto.
