Public Transport

From Kyoto Station, take the Tozai Subway Line to Higashiyama Station (approximately 15 minutes, 260 yen). From the station, it's a 5-minute walk to Shōrenin Temple. Alternatively, take Kyoto City Bus number 5, 46, or 100 from Kyoto Station to the Jingu-michi bus stop (approximately 30 minutes, 230 yen), followed by a 3-minute walk.
Walking

Shōrenin Temple is located north of Maruyama Park and next to Chionin Temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama District. From Yasaka Shrine, it's about a 10-minute walk. Follow the signs towards Chionin Temple; Shōrenin is just beside it.
Taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout Kyoto. A short taxi ride from Kyoto Station to Shōrenin Temple will cost approximately 1,500 - 2,000 yen, depending on traffic. Tell the driver you want to go to 'Shōrenin Temple' near Chionin Temple. Note: There is free parking available for visitors. However, during peak seasons, parking may be limited.

Shōrenin Temple, also known as Shōrenin Monzeki or Awata Palace, is a Tendai sect Buddhist temple located at the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama mountains. It is one of Kyoto's Monzeki temples, historically led by priests of imperial lineage, giving it a refined and stately atmosphere.Founded in the 12th century by Emperor Toba, who had Shōrenin constructed as a residence for his son to study Buddhism, the temple has close ties to the Imperial family. It even served as a temporary imperial palace for Empress Go-Sakuramachi after the Great Kyoto Fire of 1788.Visitors can wander through the temple's buildings connected by wooden walkways, including the Kachoden drawing room, which overlooks a serene pond garden. The Shinden, the temple's largest building, and the Shijokodo Hall, which houses rarely displayed sacred paintings, are also highlights. The temple grounds feature a moss garden with ancient camphor trees, some said to be 800 years old, and a bamboo grove. In spring and autumn, the temple hosts special evening illuminations.
