Getting there

Walking

From the Keifuku Arashiyama Station, exit and walk north for about 5 minutes. The temple entrance will be on your left, just past the bamboo grove. From JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, walk east for about 10-15 minutes. The path is well-marked with signs in English. No costs are involved.

Public Transport

From Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station (approx. 10 minutes, covered by the JR Pass if applicable). From there, walk 10-15 minutes to Tenryu-ji Temple. Alternatively, take Kyoto City Bus numbers 11, 28, or 93 to Arashiyama Tenryu-ji Mae bus stop, a few minutes' walk from the temple. The bus fare is ¥230 for adults and ¥120 for children within the city center.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available from Kyoto Station. A taxi ride to Tenryu-ji Temple takes approximately 12 minutes and costs between ¥3,300 and ¥4,100. Taxis can also be flagged down on the street. The base fare for a taxi in Kyoto is ¥490.

Overview

Sogenchi Garden, located within the Tenryu-ji Temple complex, offers visitors a tranquil escape into a world of natural beauty and Zen Buddhist philosophy. Designated as Japan's first Site of Special Historic and Scenic Importance, the garden was designed by Muso Soseki around 700 years ago and retains its original appearance. The garden centers around Sogen Pond, which reflects the surrounding greenery and the Arashiyama mountains, creating a sense of harmony and peace. The design incorporates the concept of 'borrowed scenery' (shakkei), using the mountains as a natural extension of the garden. Picturesque views unfold as you stroll along the winding paths, with meticulously arranged plants, trees, and rock formations that showcase the changing seasons. Key features include Ryumon Waterfall, with a carp stone placed to the side, symbolizing a fish transforming into a dragon, and the arrangement of stones representing the 'Sogen itteki'. The garden is beautiful year-round, with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage. Tenryu-ji Temple has been ravaged by fires throughout history, but Sogenchi Garden remains in its original form.
