Public Transport

From Kyoto Station, take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station (approx. 5 minutes). Alternatively, take Kyoto City Bus No. 100 or No. 206 to Fushimi Inari Taisha bus stop (approx. 15 minutes). From either location, walk towards the main entrance of Fushimi Inari Shrine, continue for about 1 kilometer, and turn left onto Minamihamacho. Teradaya Inn will be on your right at 263 Minamihamacho. Kyoto City Bus fares are a flat rate of ¥230 for adults within the central area. A Kyoto Subway and Bus 1-Day Pass costs ¥1,100.
Walking

If you are near Fushimi Inari Shrine, walk towards the main entrance and proceed straight along the road for about 1 kilometer. Turn left onto Minamihamacho, and Teradaya Inn will be on your right at 263 Minamihamacho.

Teradaya Inn, located in Kyoto's Fushimi district, is a poignant reminder of Japan's tumultuous Bakumatsu era. Originally a resting stop for travelers in the early 18th century, it evolved into a gathering place for samurai with strong political views. The inn is most famous for two incidents: the Teradaya Incident of 1862, a bloody dispute between Satsuma Domain retainers, and the attempted assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma in 1866.Sakamoto Ryoma, a pivotal figure in the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate, stayed at Teradaya Inn. In 1866, he was attacked by Bakufu patrolmen, but he managed to escape with the help of his future wife, Oryo, who famously warned him of the danger. The original inn was burned down during the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in 1868, but it was later rebuilt.Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed inn and view exhibits related to Sakamoto Ryoma, including reproductions of the room where he stayed and the bath where Oryo was when she sensed the attack. The inn offers a glimpse into the lives and events that shaped modern Japan, making it a compelling destination for history enthusiasts.
