Getting There

  • Car

    If you're traveling by car, start from the center of Nikko. Use Route 119 and follow the signs to 'Toshogu Shrine.' After approximately 10 minutes, you'll arrive at the entrance of the Toshogu Shrine complex. Park your car in the designated parking area nearby (parking fees may apply, typically around 500-1000 yen depending on duration). From the parking lot, walk towards the main entrance of Toshogu Shrine, and Yashamon Gate will be located just before entering the shrine grounds.

  • Public Transportation

    For public transportation, take the Tobu Nikko Line to Tobu Nikko Station. Once you arrive, exit the station and head to the bus stop located just outside. Take the 'Toshogu' bus (the fare is around 200 yen) which runs frequently. The bus ride will take about 10 minutes. Get off at the Toshogu Shrine stop. From there, follow the path towards the Toshogu Shrine entrance, and Yashamon Gate will be right before you enter the shrine grounds.

    If you’re already in the vicinity of Toshogu Shrine and prefer to walk, you can reach Yashamon Gate by following signs that direct you towards the shrine. The walk from the main street (where many shops and restaurants are located) to Toshogu Shrine takes about 20 minutes. Head north on Route 119, and you will see the entrance gate to Toshogu Shrine ahead. Yashamon Gate is located just inside the entrance.
