Discover more about Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum

The Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum is a unique cultural gem in Osaka, dedicated to the art of Kamigata ukiyo-e, a style of woodblock printing that flourished in the Kansai region. Unlike the Ukiyo-e prints of Edo (present-day Tokyo), Kamigata Ukiyo-e focused on realistic depictions of Kabuki actors, capturing their personalities and emotions with detailed props and stage sets. These prints served as a vital marketing tool for Kabuki plays, similar to modern-day movie posters. The museum's collection includes over 50 prints from the Bunka-Bunsei period of the Edo period to around 1887. The exhibits change themes roughly every three months, displaying about 30 pieces from the museum director's private collection. Visitors can also view ukiyo-e production tools and learn about the history of Osaka's Dotonbori district during the Edo period. For an immersive experience, visitors can participate in a Ukiyo-e printing workshop with advance reservation. The museum's story began with Seiko Takano, who, inspired by her late husband's wish to contribute to society, transformed a former cafe into the Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum in 2001. Today, the museum is a family-run endeavor, with Takano's grandchildren involved in managing overseas projects and promoting the museum's cultural legacy.
