    Discover more about Kozan-ji

Kozan-ji Temple, officially Toganōsan Kōsan-ji, is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in the tranquil Umegahata Toganōchō area of Kyoto. The temple's history stretches back to the 8th century, with its establishment traditionally attributed to Emperor Kōnin in 774, although concrete evidence of this is lacking. The temple gained prominence in the early 13th century when the monk Myōe revitalized it, aiming to revive the Kegon school of Buddhism. Myōe's influence is still palpable, with the temple grounds housing Japan's oldest tea garden, cultivated from seeds he received from China. Kozan-ji is celebrated for its collection of National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Among these, the Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga scrolls stand out. These 12th and 13th-century ink paintings are recognized as Japan's earliest manga, depicting animals in satirical scenes of human life. While the original scrolls are preserved in the Kyoto and Tokyo National Museums, replicas are displayed at the temple. The Sekisui-in Hall, dating back to the Kamakura period (1185–1333), is the oldest remaining structure and a National Treasure. This hall once served as a residence and scripture hall and offers a glimpse into the temple's historical layout. Visitors can explore the serene grounds, appreciate the replicas of the Chōjū-giga scrolls, and wander through the historic tea garden. The temple also provides scenic views of the Kiyotakigawa River Valley. Kozan-ji is part of a trio of temples in the Takao area, along with Jingo-ji and Saimyo-ji, each offering unique cultural and historical experiences.
