Discover more about Shitenno-ji

Shitenno-ji Temple, located in Osaka, is a significant historical and spiritual site, recognized as one of Japan's oldest officially administered Buddhist temples. Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, a key figure in introducing Buddhism to Japan, the temple is dedicated to the Shitenno, the four heavenly kings who guard the world from evil. Throughout its history, Shitenno-ji has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt multiple times, with many of the current buildings dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Despite these reconstructions, the temple maintains its original design, offering visitors a sense of its historical significance. The outer temple grounds are free to enter and offer a serene environment with various halls and a turtle-filled pond. For a fee, visitors can access the inner precinct (Chushin Garan), the Gokuraku-jodo Garden, and the Treasure House. The inner precinct features a five-storied pagoda that visitors can climb, and the Main Hall (Kondo), which enshrines Prince Shotoku as a statue of Kannon. The Gokuraku-jodo Garden is designed to represent the Western Paradise of Amida Buddha, providing a tranquil space with ponds, streams, and cherry trees. The Treasure House displays a collection of the temple's valuable paintings, scriptures, and artifacts. Shitenno-ji also hosts a large flea market on the 21st and 22nd of each month, offering a lively atmosphere with stalls selling textiles, antiques, and food.
