The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum, located at the foot of Mt. Rokko in Kobe, is a unique institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditions of Japanese woodworking. Established in 1984 by the Takenaka Corporation, a construction company with a 400-year history rooted in temple and shrine carpentry, the museum showcases the evolution of Japanese carpentry through its extensive collection of tools and architectural models. The museum's exhibits explore various aspects of Japanese carpentry, including the history of tools, the techniques of master craftsmen, and the use of wood in traditional architecture. Visitors can marvel at intricate wooden joints that don't rely on nails, a hallmark of Japanese construction that has allowed structures to withstand earthquakes and typhoons for centuries. Highlights include a full-scale replica of a pillar and roof section from Toshodai-ji Temple in Nara, offering a close-up view of the complex assembly of 147 wooden parts. There is also a structural model of a traditional tea ceremony room. The museum's building itself is a blend of modern and traditional Japanese architecture, harmonizing with the surrounding natural environment. The exhibition space is divided into seven zones, with audio guides available in multiple languages. Visitors can also enjoy a Japanese garden and rock garden on the premises. The museum offers woodworking programs and workshops for visitors of all ages.
