Our guide for the day was Nanami-san who was a wonderful and informative host who enriched our tour experience. Communication was easy in English and so we had lots of history and information in the lead up to each location. The day tour is a mixture of walking and train rides to move between locations so suits those who like that approach as a change. First stop Osaka castle - On approach admire the stonework that formed one defence line of the castle and note markings on the stone that indicate how they were shaped and who did the work. At the castle, as you are on an organised tour you will get quicker access and bypass the queues…which can be long. Also when in the queues to enter the castle, take the queue for the stairs rather than the one for the lift and you will get in quicker. Suggest you head up to the top first and work your way down each floor…there are stairways for each way to deal with the crowds. If you have the time and are interested in the history of the building and shogunate take the time to read the well detailed displays. As you are moving on foot you get to a couple of temples off the main track and, while smaller, all had some unique story or background to them. Nambayasaka shrine concludes the morning tour and lunch was a local favourite - Kushikatsu (like a oil fondue using vegetables and meat in batter/crumbs that you do yourself. We had not had this meal before so was also a new experience for us. After lunch the walk goes to the famed Dotombori shopping area and in the backstreets to another small temple - Muzukaki Fido temple - where the Buddha is covered in green moss due to the praying ritual at this place. The walk passes the Osaka tower on the was to the Kuromon market. Originally a fish market it has evolved to include other shops over time. All up a great day with an excellent guide and thankfully dry weather to go with the walk
