    Discover more about Nara Park

Nara Park, officially established in 1880, is a vast public park at the foot of Mount Wakakusa in the heart of Nara, Japan. Encompassing approximately 502 hectares (1,240 acres), the park is one of the oldest in Japan and is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty. It is home to numerous significant cultural and historical sites, including Todai-ji Temple, Kofuku-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The park's most famous residents are the over 1,200 wild sika deer that freely roam the grounds. These deer are considered messengers of the Shinto gods, particularly those of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and have been protected for centuries. According to legend, the god Takemikazuchi-no-Mikoto arrived from Kashima Shrine riding a white deer, leading to the deer being revered as divine envoys. Visitors can purchase special deer crackers (shika-senbei) to feed the deer, though it's important to be mindful as they can be assertive when seeking food. Within Nara Park, you'll find: * **Todai-ji Temple:** Home to a giant bronze Buddha statue (Daibutsu) and the world's largest wooden building, the Daibutsuden Hall. * **Kasuga Taisha Shrine:** A celebrated Shinto shrine known for its thousands of lanterns, which are lit during special festivals in February and August. * **Kofuku-ji Temple:** Once a powerful temple, it still boasts a five-story pagoda and a museum housing Buddhist statues. * **Isuien Garden:** A beautiful Japanese garden featuring ponds, tea houses, and borrowed scenery, including Todai-ji Temple's Nandaimon Gate and the surrounding mountains. * **Nara National Museum:** Showcasing a collection of Buddhist art and artifacts. Nara Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and cultural experiences. Whether you're admiring the Great Buddha at Todai-ji, strolling through the lantern-lined paths of Kasuga Taisha, or simply enjoying the company of the friendly wild deer, Nara Park is a destination that engages visitors with its serene atmosphere and rich heritage.
