Setting out from Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with his companion Kawai Sora, Basho journeyed to the northern interior, seeking inspiration from the places written about by earlier poets. The journey covered approximately 1,500 miles (2,400 km) and lasted about 156 days. Basho's work is celebrated for its delicate balance of personal experience, historical context, and literary allusion.
