    Discover more about Gotoh Museum

The Gotoh Museum, located in the Kaminoge area of Setagaya, Tokyo, is a serene escape into the world of East Asian art. Established in 1960 by Keita Gotoh, the founder of the Tokyu Group, the museum houses his extensive private collection. The collection includes approximately 5,000 pieces, featuring classical Japanese and Chinese art, with a smaller selection of Korean art. The museum's collection spans paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, lacquerware, and archaeological objects. Among its treasures are five National Treasures and fifty Important Cultural Properties. Noteworthy highlights include fragments of the 12th-century illustrated handscroll of *The Tale of Genji* and the *Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki*. The *Tale of Genji* scroll is often considered the world's first novel. These precious artifacts are displayed during special exhibitions in the spring and autumn. The museum building itself is designed in the Shinden-zukuri style, an architectural style used for aristocratic houses during the Heian period (late 7th to early 11th century). The museum is surrounded by a 20,000 square meter Japanese garden, offering a tranquil space for visitors to stroll and appreciate seasonal flowers like weeping cherry blossoms and azaleas. The garden also features a tea house, ponds, and Buddhist statues. The Gotoh Museum not only preserves and exhibits important artworks but also provides a space for visitors to connect with Japanese and East Asian culture. With its rotating exhibitions, beautiful architecture, and peaceful garden, the museum offers a unique and enriching experience for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
