Mt. Nokogiri Ropeway Mountain Peak Station
Reach Mt. Nokogiri's summit via ropeway for stunning views, ancient temples, and unique rock formations. A perfect day trip from Tokyo!
The Mt. Nokogiri Ropeway Mountain Peak Station serves as the gateway to the summit of Mt. Nokogiri (鋸山, Nokogiriyama), offering stunning views and access to the mountain's many attractions. The ropeway, built in 1962, ascends 680 meters in approximately 4 minutes, providing a comfortable and scenic ride. Upon arrival at the Mountain Peak Station, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding area, including Tokyo Bay and the Boso Peninsula. On clear days, it's possible to see as far as Mt. Fuji. The station also houses a restaurant, souvenir shop, and telescopes for closer viewing. The Mountain Peak Station is the ideal starting point for exploring the historic Nihon-ji Temple. Founded in 725 AD, the temple complex features the Nihon-ji Daibutsu, a 31-meter tall stone Buddha, and the Hyaku-Shaku Kannon, a carving of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy into a stone rockface. Visitors can also explore the network of hiking trails, which lead to unique rock formations and the site of 1500 Arhat statues. Mt. Nokogiri derives its name, meaning "saw mountain" in Japanese, from its jagged, saw-like profile. This unique shape is due to the mountain's history as a stone quarry during the Edo period, with the excavated stone used for major construction projects around Tokyo Bay.
