Owakudani: Hakone's Volcanic Wonderland

Experience Hakone's volcanic heart: witness steaming vents, savor black eggs, and capture stunning views of Mount Fuji from Owakudani.

4.2

Owakudani, aptly named "Great Boiling Valley," is a testament to the raw power of nature. This active volcanic zone, born from the eruption of Mount Hakone some 3,000 years ago, continues to fascinate visitors with its steaming vents, bubbling hot springs, and sulfurous fumes. Originally known as Jigokudani or "Hell Valley" due to its harsh, otherworldly environment, the area was rebranded in the Meiji Era to attract more tourists. Today, Owakudani is a key attraction in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, drawing crowds eager to witness volcanic activity up close and savor the unique local specialty: kuro-tamago. The "black eggs" are regular chicken eggs boiled in the valley's naturally hot, sulfur-rich springs. The shells turn black due to a chemical reaction with the sulfur and iron in the water, though the inside remains a normal boiled egg. Eating one is said to add seven years to your life. Visitors can explore the area around Owakudani Station on the Hakone Ropeway, where several free observation points offer views of the sulfur vents. A short, guided walking trail, requiring advance booking and a fee, takes you closer to the hot spring pools and geothermal vents. However, access may be restricted due to volcanic activity.

Local tips

  • Check the Hakone Ropeway status before you go, as it can be suspended due to weather or volcanic activity.

  • Book the guided walking trail in advance to get a closer look at the geothermal features (reservations required).
  • On clear days, Owakudani offers fantastic views of Mount Fuji, so plan your visit accordingly.
  • Be aware that Owakudani has a strong sulfur smell, which may not be suitable for everyone.
